Debunking Heliskiing Myths: Equipment, Expense and Amenities
In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some of the common myths that have sprung up over the years regarding heliskiing, heliboarding and related activities. Like many other avenues that have become much more popular in recent years, unfortunate misconceptions have come up, including a few that have become very common.
At Alaska Backcountry Guides, we’re here to debunk these myths while also giving you all the correct information you need to book one of our incredible Alaska backcountry skiing or snowboarding packages. What are some of the other basic pieces of incorrect info we tend to hear from first-timers or even those a bit more experience in this world, and what’s the correct information to work with? Here are a few common myths, debunked.
I Don’t Have Proper Equipment
If you’re nowhere close to the proper level of equipment required for backcountry skiing and snowboarding, don’t worry: You’re far from alone. The vast majority of skiers and snowboarders, even many experts, don’t have all this equipment on-hand, and in no way is this a reason for avoiding a heliskiing trip.
This is because all of our packages include full equipment packages. These range from basic personal safety equipment like airbag packs, beacons, harnesses and shovels to demo skis and potentially several other areas as-needed. This is all part of the experience, and we’ll be sure you’re both safe and comfortable at all times.
It’s Too Expensive
While there’s no question the price tag for your experience is high, it’s important to consider everything you’re getting here. Our packages feature a comprehensive experience, with seven nights of lodging either in a high-quality hotel or at your own private home. Meals from a private chef are included, even on “fly” days where you’re on the move.
As we noted above, safety and other equipment is all fully included, as are demo skis. You also have access to professional guides and ground transportation to and from the airport, plus helicopter airport transfer as an add-on. There’s so much here!
Too Many Sacrifices
Some mistakenly assume that for a heliskiing vacation, they’ll be sacrificing too much in terms of amenities and comfort. They assume that all backcountry skiing is a rugged outdoor experience – but outside the actual skiing itself, this is not the case. Our amenities are world-class at every step, as we just laid out above, and you’ll relax in complete comfort and pleasure in between your quality heliskiing or heliboarding excursions.
