Frequently Asked Questions:

  • We recommend arriving and departing out of Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC). From there you have a few options to get to Valdez:

    1. Rent a car and drive.

      • Driving is the most reliable (and cost effective) way to get to Valdez from Anchorage; inclement weather can prevent planes from flying between the two destinations. The drive is beautiful and takes ~5 hours. If you decide to drive, we recommend renting a 4-wheel drive vehicle with snow tires.

    2. Fly to/from Valdez via charter plane; we can arrange a private flight from Anchorage (~40 min). Please inquire directly for aircraft options and pricing.

    3. Fly to/from Valdez via Ravn Alaska, which is a local airline that you will need to book separate from your ticket to Alaska. Note: Ravn only operates on some Saturdays throughout the season.

    4. For guests interested in flying directly to Valdez, our airport is equipped to handle private planes.

  • We cater to guests who are strong intermediates all the way up to experts and extreme skiers/riders. At minimum, you should feel comfortable riding powder at the resort and black diamond terrain. We have a great mix of intermediate, cruising runs, as well as the incredible steeps that make Valdez world famous. We will cater the terrain to your ability.

  • Typically guests average 5-7 runs per hobbs hour and our runs are 2000-5000 feet long. 4 hobbs is normally about 3 days worth of skiing. If you go over your hours, we charge $5000/hr per 4 guests for extra helicopter time.

  • Alaskan weather does prevent us from going out everyday (the big storms are what we hope for). Skiing and flying during a storm in our glaciated terrain is not possible. The average is about 3.5 heliski days per week. We offer ski touring, massages, boat tours of Port Valdez, fishing tours, ski touring, and many more activities to keep you busy on the down-days (some activities come with an added surcharge).

  • We require a 25% deposit to book your trip; 50% deposit required for private trips. Final payment is due in its entirety by 1/1/2025. You may change the dates of your trip within the 2025 season, for no change fee, before 1/1/2025 (subject to availability).

We will not offer refunds under any other circumstance, therefore, we highly recommend purchasing travel insurance. Please see our booking contract for the full terms & conditions.

  • Alaska Backcountry Guides partners with Global Rescue to offer travel protection services.  Medical and security emergencies happen. When they do, we rely on Global Rescue to provide our guests with medical, security, travel risk and crisis response services. We highly recommend our guests enroll with Global Rescue for evacuation protection.

Travel insurance is the perfect add-on to a Global Rescue membership, providing coverage against a variety of unforeseen expenses while you’re traveling, giving you the added comfort of knowing the value of your trip is protected in case you need it.

Many travel credit cards such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve or the American Express Platinum, include travel insurance with your purchase. If your card does have this feature, pay for your trip with your card to have travel insurance included. ABG charges a 3% service fee for credit cards; this fee is easily offset by the included travel insurance and points you receive back for the purchase.

  • We do not carryover or refund any unused flight time. For this reason, we highly recommend getting travel insurance.

  • If you have a ski touring or splitboard setup, it can be worth it to have with you in Alaska. There are several spots to ski tour on days we cannot fly due to weather. We have 6 ski-touring setups from Moment skis, so if you cannot bring your own, we have some options.

  • If you would like to arrive a day early or leave a day later, there are many hotels near the Anchorage International Airport that have free shuttle services as well. Some of the hotels we like best are Hyatt House, Courtyard Marriott ANC, & The Lakefront Hotel.
